Even though its history goes back to the mid-eighteen hundreds, West Valley City was officially incorporated in 1980 when four smaller towns decided they wanted to combine to better the community. Today, West Valley is the second largest city in Utah and has a population of 124,154. Approximately 37,698 households have been built and 27% of the residents are renters. The median income is $49,691. Several businesses have established themselves in the city including Elite Foodservice, ExecuTrain, Firestone Building Products, Intercon, Norandex, Spillman Technologies, and ThyssenKrupp Safway.
At an elevation of 4,267 feet, about 21 inches of snow and 10 inches of rain fall each year. The summer high reaches about 93 degrees and the winter low gets down to about 18. Students and their education are valued and after school programs are held throughout the city to continue development. Several higher education facilities can also be found nearby. In their leisure time, residents enjoy over 20 parks, a trail system and 2 golf courses. The Family Fitness Center provides swimming pools, courts for basketball and racquetball, fitness equipment, a climbing wall, a soft play room for children, and more. Local theatrical productions can be enjoyed throughout the year by visiting the Hale Centre Theater. Other cultural events can be found at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center which includes an outdoor amphitheater, a community center and lots of open area for festivals. Popular musical artists attract visitors from across the state to the E Center and the outdoor USANA Amphitheatre. The E Center is also home to the ECHL hockey team, the Utah Grizzlies. Another major sporting venue in West Valley is the Rocky Mountain Raceway which presents races from drag to motocross. For shopping and restaurants, residents visit the Valley Fair Mall. Needless to say, there is a lot to do without even leaving the city limits.
